Since Roman and Mediaeval times, my hometown, Figline, located near Florence, has been known for the production of “figulinae”, small clay vases and statues. My recent work is named after these historic vases.
I throw miniature porcelain or stoneware avessels on a potter’s wheel and press them into distinctive forms. This act of shaping, which I consider an artistic gesture, transforms the small vases into a new composite form. The miniature functional vases thus lose their original purpose, becoming an autonomous artwork.
